In 1978 the Guinness Book of Records listed him as the world's rarest dog. Today there is a renewed interest in him as a unique family pet. A one family dog, he is suited for both urban and city living, but he does not kennel well. The Shar-Pei loose wrinkled skin gives him an appealing frowning, sad look, which is a false appearance. Once used for fighting he is now a well-mannered, friendly dog with an easy going nature, but may show aggression towards other dogs if not raised with them.

COAT: The coat is very hard and is intended to be very short and bristly (the horsecoat variety). There is also a variety with longer hair (the brushcoat) but these are not considered the best. Shar-peis come in a rainbow of different colors including black, brown red, fawn, cream, blue, apricot, isabella, and lilac. Shar Pei dogs have a blue tongue and blue pigment.

CHARACTER: This breed is loyal to its handler, playful, active, dominant, and brave. It is an intelligent dog that doesn't always follow orders slavishly, and it is reasonably vigilant.

TRAINING: Training of this dog needs to be extremely consistent. If you are too uncertain, too inconsistent, too soft, or too lenient in the dog's eyes, it will take over as boss. The Shar Pei needs a confident handler.

SOCIAL BEHAVIOR: The Shar Pei bonds with the people who form its family but they are not unfriendly towards strangers. Normally they are fine with children and cats present no problems if they have met them when young.

EXERCISE: Shar Peis have a considerable need for exercise. Provided they get enough outdoor exercise, however, they will be very peaceful indoors.
